Peer Specialist

The Peer Specialist is a member of the Day Services Team and is responsible for helping each assigned individual engage in services to the best of their ability. These services include practical resources like the computer lab, barbershop, showers and beauty salon; the Welcoming Station which helps people get to the service they need for the day including a shelter bed; the Innovation Station which helps people amplify strengths that facilitate recovery and housing acquisition while also solving problems that are serving as barriers to successful housing; the overnight shelter; and the Medical Clinic. Assigned individuals are at the 801 East Men’s Shelter, which is funded by a grant agreement with the District’s Department of Human Services (DHS). Focusing on the timely identification of participant need and engagement, the Peer Specialist works with assigned participants and with multiple systems of care, including those associated with Community Connections (e.g., with Housing Focused Case Management, Employment Services, and the Benefits Specialists); with partner agencies in the shelter (e.g. Medical Services Providers and Shelter Operations), and with outside providers (e.g., housing providers, behavioral health providers). The overarching goal is to maximize engagement in services so that housing acquisition is facilitated.  The Peer Specialist is cross-trained in the other service jobs on this contract (e.g. Employment Specialist, Housing Navigator, Housing Focused case Manager), and is able to cross-cover as necessary.

DESIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  • High School Diploma, or equivalent required; Associates Degree in Human Services preferred
  • Experience working with participants who have experienced homelessness and/or supportive housing required.
  • Personal experience with homelessness, substance abuse, mental illness, or other lived experience is highly desired
  • Experience with the “Housing First” model preferred; Experience with Critical Time Intervention, Motivational Interviewing, and Stagewise Case Management also a plus
  • Experience working with adults experiencing mental health, substance use, and or trauma preferred
  • Experience with non-profit organizations a plus
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with individuals of all levels
