Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner


This position is for an Advanced Practice Nurse/MSN/Nurse Practitioner to work in a psychiatric medication management clinic in an outpatient case management setting. Incumbent must have special training and experience in managing physical, mental and social needs of mentally ill consumers. Reports to the Clinic Administrator.


  • Provide direct nursing services for clients.
  • Perform history and physicals, record findings, evaluate, counsel and refer.
  • Orders, interprets, and evaluates diagnostic tests to identify and assess the client’s clinical problems and health care needs.
  • Prescribe psychiatric and medical medications.
  • Provide a comprehensive psycho educational program for consumers and families regarding the consumer’s mental illness, treatment goals, benefits and risk of treatment, medication management and self-monitoring aids.
  • Interact with clients, family members and their primary care physicians.
  • Complies with medical record policies regarding complete and accurate documentation.
  • Evaluate, plan and implement the care of consumers requiring emergency measures.
  • Manage a client caseload in consultation with a psychiatrist.

  • Master’s degree in Nursing, preferably in Psychiatry/Mental Health plus a minimum of 2 years proven experience providing care and treatment in a progressive Adult Inpatient or Outpatient Psychiatric Clinic program are required.
  • Actively Licensed as a Nurse Practitioner in the District of Columbia
  • Current BLS
  • Current Controlled Substance license in the District of Columbia
  • One year of community-based relevant experience is preferred
