FIELD PLACEMENT PROGRAM FOR GRADUATE SOCIAL WORK STUDENTS
Since 1985, Community Connections has provided field placement instruction for up to eight first year social work students. We generally accept two students from each of the area graduate schools of social work: Catholic University, Howard University, University of Maryland, and Virginia Commonwealth University.
The student experience is a full one providing case management services to a caseload of three consumers; taking on a fourth consumer at the beginning of second semester. Typically, half of the students’ time is spent in the community advocating for their consumers as they are taking clients to doctor's appointments, visiting with them in their homes, and coordinating services with other providers. Additionally, weekly individual supervision is provided as well as weekly seminars or support groups. The student will be able to attend a weekly clinical team meeting as well. In the team, they will be part of a group of social workers who are discussing clinical issues as they relate to the consumers, problem solving, and supporting each other in this demanding work.
The student supervisors meet weekly in order to discuss the progress of the students and receive supervision themselves in order to provide the best quality instruction possible for the students during their experience here at Community Connections.
