Cold Weather Alerts
Did you know that Community Connections has a Homeless
Services Team? This team of dedicated people serve individuals who are
experiencing homelessness in the District of Columbia. They provide a wide
range of services that cater to the homeless population. While the weather is
changing and the temperatures are getting colder, the Homeless Services Team
wants to remind everyone who may be at risk what they can do to stay warm. The
team encourages individuals to call the Shelter Hotline number at 202-399-7093.
Anyone can utilize this service to refer someone in need or an individual can
call for themselves. When calling the hotline, a van will be sent out to pick up
the individual and take them to a safe, warm place. The team in conjunction
with DHS and DBH go around the District and provide warming gear such as,
gloves, hats and scarves, handwarmers and blankets to those vulnerable to the
cold weather. During the day it is encouraged that individuals seek shelter at
recreation centers and local libraries. In the evening individuals can seek
shelter at emergency shelters such as 801 East, New York Avenue Shelter,
Harriett Tubman Women’s Shelter, DC General Family Shelter among others. The
team is always in need of donation of warm attire to distribute. If you are
interested in donating you can drop off items at 801 Pennsylvania Ave SE.
