Services for Homeless Individuals

One of the first qualitative studies at Community Connections, in the 1980s, focused on the experiences and needs of homeless women in the District of Columbia. Since then, several projects have addressed the multiple concerns of homeless people served by the mental health system..

• Services for Homeless Individuals with Co-Occurring Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders. This study examined the effects of integrated mental health, substance abuse, and housing services for homeless "dually diagnosed" adults.
  
  
• The D.C. Integrated Services Project. This project implemented and evaluated integrated services in support of people with mental health and/or substance use disorders as they moved from transitional to permanent housing.
  
  
• Options Plus: Homeless Services and Jail Diversion. This project provides a comprehensive package of evidence-based services for homeless individuals with severe mental disorders who are part of a post-booking jail diversion program in the District of Columbia.
  
  
• Creating Communities: A Response to Chronic Homelessness. (This project focuses on developing a recovery-oriented supportive network of professionals and peers for people with histories of long-term or repeated homelessness.
